THE EPIDEMIC
There are hundreds glue sniffing youth who live and work in the streets of Managua, Nicaragua’s city capital.
These children have fled their homes to escape situations of abuse, neglect and abandonment. For many, glue is their only affordable escape. Often forced to grow up too quickly, they can’t resist the escapism that the hunger-suppressing glue provides from the neglect and pain these children face living on the streets.
Substance abuse is just a small component in the much greater vicious cycle in which these children are trapped. For many, that begins with poverty, familial instability, abandonment, abuse, or a combination of factors.
There is a need for programs to help these children overcome life and addiction on the streets and to find love and support. AvanseOrg is one of the few organizations making an impact in the lives of these ignored children.
The first step to empowering these youth is by raising awareness and educating yourself on the issue.
